The Importance of Talking To Your Doctor About Diabetes

Learning to live with diabetes can be very difficult. This is especially true if you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, or if the severity of your diabetes has changed. One thing that can help you understand and manage your disease is to learn how to talk to your doctor, and the entire health team caring for you.

It is not a good idea to wait until your next scheduled doctor’s appointment if you feel your diabetes is causing you problems. Doctors’ offices are busy, but your physician would rather see you now to try to help prevent a serious problem.

Diabetic Warning Signs

If you are a person with diabetes, you should be aware of the signs that could indicate you are having a problem with your blood sugar levels.
If you have too high a blood glucose level, you may experience these signs:

Healthy Habits

Eye Care

It is important to have an annual eye exam. If you notice any change in your vision, contact your doctor immediately. High blood sugar can cause vision problems. Good control of blood sugar promotes long-term visual health and reduces the risk of developing vision problems.

Foot Care

Check your feet daily for sores, redness, swelling or bruises. Wash your feet daily with soap and water, and dry thoroughly. Wear good quality shoes that fit properly. Refrain from going barefoot to protect your feet from wounds. If you have trouble taking care of your feet, ask your doctor for a referral for professional services.

Hand Care

Check with your doctor if:

  • You feel numbness or tingling in your fingers, hands, or
    wrists
  • You think that your fingers are starting to thicken or become
    thicken

Dental Care

  • Use a soft-bristle brush
  • Brush and floss at least twice daily
  • Brush using a gentle circular motion
  • If your gums bleed, check with your dentist
